Easily understand what's going on in your business and maximize process insights!
Power Automate Process Mining – process extraction

At Microsoft Inspire 2023, Microsoft announced that Power Automate Process Mining will become generally available. Power Automate Process Mining, along with next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI), enables organizations to easily understand what is happening in their business, maximize process insights, use out-of-the-box recommendations to reduce process complexity, transform operations, and drive continuous process improvement with automation and low-code applications. Extracting processes and tasks is fundamental for any organization to provide deep process insights.

What is Process Mining?

Process mining is a technique designed to discover, monitor, and improve processes by extracting readily available knowledge from information systems. This process gives a clearer overview of how business processes work and which ones need to be improved. In addition, company managers can take a completely objective, data-based approach to help them solve problems and guide decision-making based on real-time data.

What is the difference between process extraction, data extraction, and business process management?

Process mining is often confused with data mining and business process management. Data mining is the analysis of large volumes of data to find patterns, discover trends, and gain insights.

Process mining is a form of data mining specifically used to find patterns within an organization's processes. Here, the goal is to find information about business processes and discover, compare, or improve a particular process, while data mining involves a much broader set of data to do things that include predicting customer behavior, examining customer churn, detecting fraud, and finding other beneficial personal information about your customers.

Business process management refers to a company's efforts to analyze, optimize, and accelerate processes. In this case, processes are recorded manually in a software monitoring system using interviews, workshops, and questionnaires. Business process management data is generally much more qualitative, as its inputs are from real humans, but process extraction provides a much more quantitative approach to this same data.

Business process management is the human operations view of business processes, while process extraction reveals what the actual process is based on objective data.

Types of business process extraction models

  • Detection
The most common type of process extraction is a detection process - the use of event log data to create a process model without any external influence from an existing process model.

  • Compliance
A compliance check process verifies that an intended process model is used in practice. This type of process evaluates a process description for an existing process model based on its event log data and tries to identify any deviations from the intended process model.

  • Improvement
An improvement process involves improving an existing process model based on data from a compliance verification process.

Benefits of process mining

  • Objective information
Process extraction provides fact-based information based on real data to help your managers audit, analyze, and improve existing business processes.

  • More economical, faster, and more accurate
Unlike the manual processes often seen with business process management, process extraction provides more accurate information much more quickly and economically than process mapping workshops and other manual input processes.

  • Works with existing systems
Process extraction can work with your existing software systems to help you expand your existing technology investments without the need to invest in new software technologies.

  • Identifies inefficiencies and provides insights with in-depth analysis
Provides insights for process improvement by capturing advanced visual process maps, analyzing end-to-end processes with AI-powered root cause analysis, and unlocking hierarchical views with interactive drill-downs.

Process extraction can provide automated process mapping, process detection, and data analysis to improve every process in your company to keep it running and producing the desired results. If all processes are efficient, a company can adapt to new technologies quickly and efficiently.
