End of Skype: What’s Next?

Microsoft will discontinue Skype to focus on Microsoft Teams
End of Skype: What’s Next?

We have reached the end of the Skype era, the internet-based phone and video service that was the dominant way to keep people connected in the mid-2000s. The product was launched in 2003 in Estonia and quickly became popular worldwide for its ability to make free international calls, a traditionally expensive service on the telephone network. It was acquired by Microsoft in 2011, but its popularity has faded in recent years.

The video calling platform will be replaced in May 2025 by a free version of Microsoft Teams, the modern communication and collaboration hub. This move aims to simplify free communication offerings and adapt to customer needs.

In this free version of Teams, users can access almost the same core features they use on Skype, such as individual and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Additionally, Teams offers enhanced features like meeting organization and calendar management.

What’s next for Skype users

During the transition process, Skype users have two options:

  • Migrate to Microsoft Teams for free
Microsoft provides access to Teams on any supported device using Skype credentials. By logging into Teams with a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app so users can continue from where they left off. During the transition period, Teams users can call and chat with Skype users and vice versa.

  • Export Skype data
If you do not want to migrate to Teams, you can export data, including chats, contacts, and call history.

Skype will be available until May 5, 2025, so users have time to explore Teams and decide which option is best.
